And the winners of the Short Writing Contest 2020 are…

Before we get any further, thank you all for participating in the contest! These stories were short, but made us feel emotions from all over the spectrum. They were wonderful to read with our guest judge, Mrs. Jensen (our librarian!), and in the end, we chose five outstanding stories to award.

Find the winning stories below!

Grand Prize (High School)

“Just Spaghetti” by Fiona Kong (‘22)

We really loved the creativity and unique perspective in this story! Despite the word limit, great imagery and solid writing clinched the Grand Prize for “Just Spaghetti” — and we sincerely hope that spaghetti will stay spaghetti.

Grand Prize (Middle School)

“Back to a Bowl of Soup” by Joyce Lee (‘25)

“Back to a Bowl of Soup” was poignant and satisfying. We were so impressed with how large of an impression it made on us, despite only being 500 words! It was a well-rounded story, and it, like soup, left us full.

Honorable Mentions

  • “Altos Regiment” by Albert Shu (‘21)

  • “Summer Memories” by Bea Zorzella (‘25)

  • “Elf!” by Annie Mao (‘27)

It was difficult to choose between all the stories! If you didn’t get awarded, don’t worry — you’ll still be published in Aperture’s Autumn 2020 edition, and there will be other writing contests.
Regardless the result, continue writing and revising your work, and we hope to see you again in Aperture in the future!
