Ode to Cod

Poem by Michelle Wei (‘27)

| SPRING 2023 ISSUE | POETRY

Delicious cod, flavorful cod

A marvel of admiration talked about all day

Swims from salty waters and into the net

Comes fresh from the sea right next to me

Pitiful fish, you are the key to my pleasure

My plate’s usual companion and my mind’s loyal friend

A spark of delight when entering my mouth

Slightly buttery and a little bit savory

As I munch into your soft and tender flesh

Indulging in that quenching juiciness

A gift of satisfaction seeps into my mind

I see your wild, natural, tasty sense of taste

You are your masterpiece, glimmering in your school

Precisely judged by finicky eyes like mine

Why did I pick you, joyful Pacific bite?
